The Ultimative Outlet Shopping Experience In Germany

Anzeige / Cooperation

Dear Aviator,

Who doesn’t like shopping to upgrade one’s closet and to stay fashionable? It is even more fun when you can get exclusive designer pieces at reduced prices. You can find the ultimate outlet shopping experiences in Germany. The Outletcity Metzingen close to Stuttgart is where I visited recently.

The “City of Shopping” makes the heart of every fashion lover and bargain-hunters beat faster. During multiple lockdowns we spent more time at home and it didn’t seem necessary to buy new clothing. Since some travel restrictions have been lifted and we can live a “normal” life again, it definitely makes sense to renew or update our wardrobe again.

Be sure to read the blog post carefully, because I have managed to organize a VIP shopping code for you, which is valid until the end of this year. I will also let you know how you can fly for free.

The Outlet City Metzingen History

The city of Metzingen has a long-lasting history of fashion. Following industrialization, different textile factories were built in Metzingen. Hugo Boss, which was founded in Metzingen and still has its headquarters there, opened its factory outlet in 1972 and was soon followed by other famous companies.

What Does Outlet Mean?

You can expect at least 30% off the retail price. In The Outletcity you will sometimes find price reductions up to 70%.

Which Stores Can You Expect?

The Outletcity Metzingen offers around 130 premium and luxury brands. Primarily you will find fashion brands, but also stores which offer beauty, jewellery and various lifestyle products. To name some of my favourite fashion brands: Versace, Dolce&Gabbana, Hugo Boss, Michael Kors, Schiesser, Falke and Karl Lagerfeld. You can be certain that everyone in the family will find a store which suits his/her style and taste.

What Makes Outletcity Metzingen So Special?

It is Europe’s biggest outlet with over 130 stores of premium and luxury brands. I really like the puristic and minimalistic architecture of the buildings. It is extraordinary that the stores are not separated from the city, they are part of the city enhancing the shopping experience. I have never seen anything like this before. The locals live right next to Gucci, Prada and Underamour and co.

How Much Time Should You Plan?

It certainly depends on how much you want to shop. I definitely recommend you to plan a full day so you have enough time to visit all the stores you like. In the Outletcity app you will find a list of all brands and their location. I “hearted” the stores I wanted to visit to have a better overview.

Once you are logged in with your profile, you are a member of the Outletcity Club and you will be able to start collecting points. Spending 1€ means you will get 1 Outletcity point. You can either collect them while paying at the stores’ register or you scan your invoice. It is also possible to collect them in their online shop. 10 Tips On How To Become A Successful Trader

Anzeige / Cooperation

Hey Aviators,

Have you ever thought about investing your money, buying cryptocurrency, trading with assets but you do not have any clue how to get started? Every beginning is difficult, especially when it involves your savings because nobody wants to lose money he/she worked hard for. In this blog post I am giving you 10 tips on how to get started and how you can become a successful trader. In the beginning, it is vital to follow guidelines which set the foundation for a profitable investment.

I am relatively new to the stock market and trading business. During the corona crisis, I started to research more to increase my knowledge about investing. It is a very complex topic and to really understand the world of finances it takes years. Luckily, finances have always been an interest to me since my dad works in this area. And I worked in an investment company during my high school years.

Become a successful trader

I decided to take the step to invest my money at the beginning of this year. Maybe you feel the same? Now I am kind of mad at myself that I did not start earlier. It was a great coincidence that the Social Trading Platform NAGA reached out to me and asked me if I wanted to collaborate with them. For a few months now I have been presenting the benefits of this trading platform to you on my Instagram, and why you should consider investing to become a successful trader.

Inform yourself, build up your knowledge, stay up to date. Lacking knowledge about the stock market and their different products increase the risk of losing money. Before you order stocks of a certain company, read their analysis thoroughly and follow their share price. This will lower the chance of disappointment.

Nowadays people invest just because it is a trend at the moment without knowing anything about the stock or crypto currencies. According to the CEO of NAGA, Benjamin Bilski, you should invest a lot of time and several thousands of Euros in your education. Please find my interview with Benjamin here or find it below in this article. It is very educational and helpful for all beginners!

We all want our money to be safe. Maybe it is a wise idea to open up several depots in case your investments bust the margin over 100,000€. Basically, all banks within the European Union (EU) have a deposit insurance of 100,000€ per client. So in case, the bank goes bankrupt the government will refund your money.

Depending on your needs there are different trading platforms. NAGA is quite special since it is a social trading platform where you can connect with other traders and share news and tips. So it is like Facebook for Finances. Additionally, they offer their traders an auto-copy function which allows them to follow the investment of other successful traders automatically.

I don’t recommend investing in just one asset, crypto or other financial product. On one side you could maximise your profits but on the other, the chances are higher to lose money as well. The goal of success is to diversify your depot. Different branches, companies, services, products, etc. There is no limit of different stocks you can hold in your portfolio. But after 30 different stocks, it makes sense to invest in Funds or ETFs. (Exchange Traded Funds / Indexfonds. Of course, you can also gamble with fiance products but like in a casino the risks of losing everything are very high.

How to become a successful trader

Investing is dangerous. No investment is risk-free. But do you know what else is dangerous? Losing your money to inflation, living paycheck to paycheck, relying on being given a state pension when you’re old, being at the mercy of your boss. Life is dangerous. Investing is a worthwhile risk and not doing anything with your money is risky!

Absolutely. The price for Bitcoin has shown this. A price correction of 40% within a few weeks after it reached an all-time high. Be very careful when investing in crypto and know which crypto you buy. There are a lot of coins out there which do not resemble a real value so it is more like gambling than investing! On the other end, we are in the very beginning of crypto currencies and the potential is extreme. So it does make sense to invest 5-10% of your assets (according to the CEO of NAGA) in crypto.

How to become a successful trader

It makes absolute sense to start investing at an early age. Even when you have only 50€ extra in a month. Do not invest it in a new computer game,  invest it in the company which produces the games. The share price will increase over the years. The price for the game will lose money. Here is a simple example: Investing 50€ every month for 30 years into an ETF (with a return of 7% per annum) you could grow your depot to 58,825€ and you just paid 18,000€ into it.

Do not just follow trends without knowing any background and knowledge information about them. It is wise to invest in companies you like and would like to support. Which products and services do you use in your everyday life? Think about companies which will still exist in the future and those who will grow because society needs them.

How to become a successful trader

Trading can be an emotional rollercoaster ride. Happiness can soon turn to doubt, anxiety to hope. Investing can be very hard but it is important to sustain your clear mind and not to be controlled by your emotions. When it is going down it eventually goes up again – like during turbulence on a flight.

Money is money and nothing more! Of course, we need money to pay our bills but money consists of digits only and they do not make us happy in the long term.

You should not be too eager while investing. The money for investments should be “superfluous”. Neither should you need it at the moment nor should you plan with it.

If you would like to get started with absolutely zero risks, you can register with NAGA and create a DEMO account with 10,000€. This allows you to invest fictitious money to see how you would perform. This way you can exercise, learn and observe.

Please do not forget to like the blog post on how you can become a successful trader. Let me know if you are trading already in a comment below.

Happy landings and happy investing!

Skydive - Should You Dare To Jump Out Of An Airplane?

Anzeige / Cooperation

Dear Aviators,

It is one of those experiences you have to do once in your lifetime. But it is also one of those things you need to have a lot of courage for. Most of all, you will need a lot of strength to overcome multiple fears to do it. I am talking about SKYDIVING! I already did it twice and I want you to dare to do it as well.

+ Full video of my jump in this blog post +

This time I don’t fly the plane

Normally I am sitting behind the controls of an airplane – to jump out of an airplane is not something I do everyday. You know that I am a thrill seeker and my last trip to Dubai satisfied my desire for adrenaline. It was one of my most thrilling vacations I ever had. But you don’t need to fly to Dubai to go skydiving. I am sure that a provider is close to your location as well. 2021 will be a difficult year to go traveling due to restrictions and quarantine regulations, so I think we will mostly concentrate on discovering our home country, trying new activities and spending a lot of time in nature.

Might interest you as well: The City Of Superlatives – The Most Thrilling Activities in Dubai

sky dive dubai

Aren’t those moments we experience intense emotions, the moments we feel most alive?! The emotions I felt during the moment I jumped out of the plane, the free fall through the air followed by the flight with the parachute blew my mind. It ranged from adrenaline rushes and excitement to nervousness and anxiety. Especially those feelings which make you worry and automatically ask  “what if” questions come into your mind and prevent us from trying out new things especially when it involves something which looks frightening at first.

the moment the airplane door opened at 12,000 ft I questioned myself what I was doing here.

Those what if questions?!

I was really looking forward to skydiving, but the moment the airplane door opened at 12,000 ft I questioned myself “what I was doing here. Am I that stupid?” The good thing is you don’t have any option other than to jump. I said to myself – in case I die it will be rather quick and it was during something I love to do: flying! The moment we left the plane all my worries were left behind in the airplane. I just felt pure joy!  After touching down I was sad that the last 4 minutes passed by so quickly and I wanted to jump again straight away.

How dangerous is it really?

Of course nothing is 100% risk free in life. You need to trust in your professional tandem jumper and the equipment. You must follow the guidelines and listen carefully during the safety briefing to make the jump as safe as possible but in the end you need to trust the provider, the safety procedures, the professional tandem jumper and the equipment. If this does not calm you in any way, then the following numbers might.

The average probability to have an accident during skydiving is 0,026%. To die from it lies at 0,0013%. But this in perspective. The probability to die on a ride with a car is about 0,01%. This means the journey by car to the skydive experience is much more deadly than the jump itself.

The experience has a price tag

The price for a tandem jump highly depends on the location, the jump elevation and the provider.

The first time I did skydiving was in South Africa in 2018. One of the most iconic skydiving locations is over The Palm in Dubai. The price is three times higher (approx. 340 €) than the  jump in Cape Town but the jump elevation was a lot higher and the view a lot more spectacular. The jump is priceless and the memories will last a lifetime!

My Favorite Aviation Movies You Have To Watch

Anzeige / Cooperation

Dear Aviators,

I have to admit that I have never watched so many movies and series before like in 2019. The pandemic with its lockdowns (now the 2nd one in Germany) made it possible. The free time you would normally spend with friends, going to a restaurant or working out in the gym you spend now at home. What to do in the evening when there is nothing else to do? Turn on the TV and watch my favorite aviation movies.

favorite aviation movies

I present to you my favorite aviation movies you have to watch as well. Airplanes: They’re a useful mode of transportation, reliable subject matter for hacky stand-up comics, and a linchpin for some of the most memorable movies ever made.

Ironically, many of my choices would never play on an actual airplane: They would be too upsetting for most passengers on board. The thrill and terror of flying is the perfect dramatic device to create chills, scares, and big laughs.

Which streaming provider should you use?

The perfect streaming which provides all movies for a monthly flat rate does not exist yet. I use a combination of providers to have the best flexibility and the best selection.

The streaming providers I am using:

My Favorite Aviation Movies

(sorted by year of publication)

A legendary aviation movie. During my private jet I flew once Meg Ryan. After my duty I arrived at the hotel and turned on the TV. The channel which came up was broadcasting Top Gun. Such a funny coincidence.

Plot: The Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School is where the best of the best train to refine their elite flying skills. When hotshot fighter pilot Maverick (Tom Cruise) is sent to the school, his reckless attitude and cocky demeanor put him at odds with the other pilots, especially the cool and collected Iceman (Val Kilmer). But Maverick isn’t only competing to be the top fighter pilot, he’s also fighting for the attention of his beautiful flight instructor, Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis).

I do not know how often I have watched this movie as a teenager. I was fascinated how the stealth bomber docks underneath a Boeing B747 mid-flight.

Plot: When terrorists hijack a plane traveling from Greece to Washington, D.C., U.S. Army specialist David Grant (Kurt Russell) and Lt. Colonel Austin Travis (Steven Seagal) join forces to bring the plane to safety. While terrorists on board the plane claim they hijacked the plane to force the U.S. government to release their leader, who was captured by military forces, David and Austin discover that the plane is carrying a bomb full of nerve gas to be released on Washington, D.C.

The movie is worth watching just because you can find out how the Air Force One looks inside!

Plot: After making a speech in Moscow vowing to never negotiate with terrorists, President James Marshall (Harrison Ford) boards Air Force One with his family (Wendy Crewson, Liesel Matthews) and advisers. When a group of terrorists led by Ivan Korshunov (Gary Oldman) hijacks the flight, the President’s principles are put to the test. Feigning escape, ex-soldier Marshall stows away in the aircraft and must race against time to rescue his family and everyone else on board.

 2002 Crime / Drama IMDB 8,5

One of my favorite movie scenes: Leonardo DiCaprio walks as pilot with his good looking crew through the airport terminal.

Plot: Frank Abagnale, Jr. (Leonardo DiCaprio) worked as a doctor, a lawyer, and as a co-pilot for a major airline — all before his 18th birthday. A master of deception, he was also a brilliant forger, whose skill gave him his first real claim to fame: At the age of 17, Frank Abagnale, Jr. became the most successful bank robber in the history of the U.S. FBI Agent Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks) makes it his prime mission to capture Frank and bring him to justice, but Frank is always one step ahead of him.

2004 Drama / Epic IMDB 7,5

You cannot get more aviation in a movie. This is why it is one of my favorite aviation movies. It shows that bravery and passion is needed to shape and develop aviation.

Plot: Billionaire and aviation tycoon Howard Hughes (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a successful public figure: a director of big-budget Hollywood films such as “Hell’s Angels,” a passionate lover of Hollywood leading ladies Katharine Hepburn (Cate Blanchett) and Ava Gardner (Kate Beckinsale), and an aviation pioneer who helps build TWA into a major airline. But in private, Hughes remains tormented, suffering from paralyzing phobias and depression. The higher he rises, the further has to fall.

Did you know? In commercial aviation, a red-eye flight is a flight scheduled to depart at night and arrive the next morning. The term “red-eye” derives from the symptom of having red eyes, which can be caused by fatigue.

Plot: In the wake of her grandmother’s funeral, hotel manager Lisa Reisert (Rachel McAdams) is waiting to fly back home when she meets charming Jackson Rippner (Cillian Murphy) at check-in. She thinks it’s lucky that they’re seated together on the plane, but soon learns otherwise. Jackson hopes to assassinate the head of Homeland Security, but to do so, he needs Lisa to reassign the official’s room number at her hotel. As insurance, Jackson has kidnapped Lisa’s father (Brian Cox).

For an avgeek it is always hard to watch a movie in which “fake” airplanes are used. In this one it is a better looking A380.

Plot: Airplane engineer Kyle Pratt (Jodie Foster) is heading home from Germany to New York on a double-decker Elgin 474 to bury her husband. But three hours into the flight, she awakens to find her young daughter missing — and the entire flight crew, including Capt. Rich (Sean Bean) and Air Marshal Gene Carson (Peter Sarsgaard), claims that the child was never on board. Determined to find her daughter, Kyle searches the limited space of the plane, all the while trying to maintain her sanity.

2012 Drama / Thriller IMDB 7,3

The movie tackles the very real issues that some pilots have had with drugs and alcohol. Pilots are regular people, and in my opinion they are more susceptible to addiction given the irregular schedules, sleep loss, loneliness, and temptation faced when living out of a suitcase on multi day trips.

Plot: Commercial airline pilot Whip Whitaker (Denzel Washington) has a problem with drugs and alcohol, though so far he’s managed to complete his flights safely. His luck runs out when a disastrous mechanical malfunction sends his plane hurtling toward the ground. Whip pulls off a miraculous crash-landing that results in only six lives lost. Shaken to the core, Whip vows to get sober — but when the crash investigation exposes his addiction, he finds himself in an even worse situation.

This is one of my favorite aviation movies. Thrilling, exciting and makes you think Less aviation but more space travel.

Plot: In Earth’s future, a global crop blight and second Dust Bowl are slowly rendering the planet uninhabitable. Professor Brand (Michael Caine), a brilliant NASA physicist, is working on plans to save mankind by transporting Earth’s population to a new home via a wormhole. But first, Brand must send former NASA pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and a team of researchers through the wormhole and across the galaxy to find out which of three planets could be mankind’s new home.

Plot: Alcoholic and world-weary, U.S. Air Marshal Bill Marks (Liam Neeson) lost his passion for his work long ago. Even though lives are potentially at stake during every flight, he sees the assignment as just a desk job. However, his “ordinary day at the office” becomes a high-stakes crisis during a flight to London. Marks receives a series of text messages demanding that he instruct the airline to transfer $150 million into an offshore account, or a passenger will die every 20 minutes.

2016 DRAMA IMDB 7,4

Pilot Sully, our aviation hero. It is shocking to see which legal processes he had to go through even though he saved all lives.

Plot: On Jan. 15, 2009, Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) tries to make an emergency landing in New York’s Hudson River after US Airways Flight 1549 strikes a flock of geese. Miraculously, all of the 155 passengers and crew survive the harrowing ordeal, and Sullenberger becomes a national hero in the eyes of the public and the media. Despite the accolades, the famed pilot now faces an investigation that threatens to destroy his career and reputation.

2019 Thriller / Drama IMDB 6,3

The movie was entirely shot from inside the cockpit. Sounds boring. Not really. It had some really exciting but also illogical parts. Find out yourself.

Plot: Tobias Ellis starts his shift as a co-pilot and everything seems normal, but things quickly take a turn when terrorists storm the cockpit of his Airbus A319, and hijack the plane.

Plot: In 1862 headstrong scientist James Glaisher and wealthy young widow Amelia Wren mounted a balloon expedition to fly higher than anyone in history. As their perilous ascent reduces their chances of survival, the unlikely duo soon discover things about themselves — and each other — that help both of them find their place in the world.

2019 Science Fiction / Drama IMDB 6,5

Not a movie about aviation rather about space travel. I really enjoyed how the filmmakers visualized the future traveling to the moon and mars.

Plot: Thirty years ago, Clifford McBride led a voyage into deep space, but the ship and crew were never heard from again. Now his son — a fearless astronaut — must embark on a daring mission to Neptune to uncover the truth about his missing father and a mysterious power surge that threatens the stability of the universe.

Enjoy watching my favorite aviation movies. Make sure you like my blog post and let me know about which one is your favorite!

I wish you a merry Christmas my Aviator! Stay safe and healthy!

7 Presents For Aviation Fans

Anzeige / Cooperration

Dear Aviator,

Like every year, the question arises, what am I giving away? If you are planning to make a present to one of your beloved ones and you still need some inspiration then I have a couple of gift ideas for you. In this article you will find presents for Aviation fans. To gift it to yourself is an option as well. There is something for every budget.

Presents For Aviation Fans

Wood airplane model

Low Budget

I am sure that every avgeek has at least one model plane at home. Usually they are made out of plastic which makes them look cheap. I used to have several models sitting on a shelf but I never really liked the look of them. They ended up retiring in a box in the basement.

Through my Crazy Aviator Squad I got to know the brand The “Wooden Model Company” which produces airplane models out of wood. You can personalize them with an engraving. I have now an A380 out of mahogany wood which looks very classy.

The First Aviation Watch

High Budget

I was extremely surprised when I recently found out that one of my favorite brands Cartier built the first aviation wristwatch in history. The story behind the watch “Santos de Cartier” is iconic. In 1904, Louis Cartier granted the wish of famous Brazilian pilot Alberto Santos Dumont: to be able to tell time while in the air. Thus, one of the first wristwatches was created. The rounded angles of the dial, the seamless curve of the horns, and the exposed screws made for an iconic watch that would inspire countless reinterpretations for both men and women. I am very happy to add this watch to my collection. Its minimalist style and the extraordinary shape make an elegant timepiece everyone would be happy to receive.

Aviator Shades

Medium budget

A must for all Aviators: Aviator shades! The most popular ones are from RayBan which come in all different colors. But different brands now offer their interpretation of pilot sunglasses; for example the Chanel “Pilot sunglasses” with a dark blue and gold frame and blue lenses. Cartier also has a model called “C de Cartier” which fits into the “aviator sunglasses” category.

Custom Made Oil Painting

Medium budget

The company “Artminded” creates paintings tailored to your wishes. You can decide on the motive, style, color and size. The artists will create a unique art piece which will upgrade your interior design. I sent one of my favorite Uniform Instagram posts as reference to Artminded – this amazing painting came out of it. This definitely works as a present as well and I am sure you will blow the recipient’s mind with it. Keep in mind that it takes several weeks to have the oil painting produced for you.

The Book: “My glamorously unglamorous life as a jet-set pilot”

Low budget

The book is about my turbulent journey as a pilot and how much effort and pain it took me to be where I am today. I’m not only sharing glamorous and unbelievable aviation stories I experienced but I‘m also talking about grievances in the aviation industry like the lack of diversity and the existence of discrimination. Order it here in English or German!

  • A biography of my aviation career
  • A mentor for young pilots and travelers
  • A revelation about grievances in aviation
  • A selection of my greatest anecdotes of the rich and famous on board
  • And a secret that until now has always flown below radar.

Overnight in the cockpit

Medium Budget

A must for every aviation fan: A overnight stay in the most extraordinary hotel built inside the most legendary airplane in the world. “Jumbostay” at Stockholm airport makes this possible. I had the chance to visit this retired Boeing 747 two times during a day stop. I have not had the chance to sleep on board it but I was able to get a tour through the entire airplane. They offer different room categories. You can even stay in the engines but the highlight is the suite inside the former cockpit. It is a dream come true. A gift card for an overnight stay in the Jumbo Hotel would definitely make your aviation buddy very happy.

Airline Seat Belt

Low Budget

I am sure you will make everyone happy with this present even though it is the least expensive one in this listing. The belt is made out of an original airplane seat belt buckle. This way your friend, the aviation fan, will be able to wear an original airplane part. I can assure you that he/she will be happy.

Just a brief note: I have chosen those products because of my conviction and not because I got paid to promote it. I hope my listing will inspire your presents for aviation fans. Make sure you like my blog post and let me know about which present you would be the most happy.

To give away and to get presents is joyful but thing we learnt from 2021 is to enjoy the little things in life and that our health has top priority.

Top secret project revealed: I wrote a book for you

Dear Aviator,

you won’t believe how excited I was to share with you the big news. I really had a hard time keeping this project secret for a very long time. Now I am a little bit relieved that I can finally tell you. You were excited to find out about this secret and I was curious to see your reaction. I still cannot believe it but I wrote a PilotPatrick book.

pilotpatrick book

Why did I write a book?

About two years ago I came up with the idea to write a book. I am used to writing blog posts which comprise about 1000 words but writing a whole book would definitely be on a different level. How would I get started? Where would I sell it? How to structure it? I had so many questions and ideas in my head that I was a little bit overwhelmed by it. It was not a matter of writing material and stories I had to tell, I was concerned where I would find thee time to write my book.

Even though I am “only” 32 years old I already experienced a lot in the aviation world. I wanted to talk about it in more than just a caption on Instagram or an article on my blog. Serious topics which should reach more than “just” my Aviators. The dream and desire to have a book emerged but I had to put it on hold when my Captains upgrade kept me busy. My plan was to keep working on it once I feel comfortable on the left seat of the cockpit.

I guess the publisher Riva knew somehow about my intention when they reached out to me and asked don’t you want to write a book with us?”

How long did it take?

Due to Covid-19 lockdown, I was able to use the time productively for my book. It took about one year from launching the project with the publisher Riva until holding the first printed version in my hands. It might seem like a long time but considering what it takes to write a book it is not really that long. It was an interesting journey until now and I learnt a lot about books in that time.

What is it about?

My glamorously unglamorous life as a jet-set pilot“. I take you on board of my turbulent aviation career with tricky maneuvers and curious passengers. Besides stories you will not believe actually happened, I tell you how I became a pilot and why I became one in the first place. You will get insights into the glamorous world of the rich and famous I have flown around the world  but aviation has also an unglamorous side. Grievances plague an industry which seems to be so glittery. There is also a secret about myself which I have kept below radar and the time has come to talk about it.

When will it be available?

You can already order it on Amazon. The official sales launch is the 13th of October. Book shops like Thalia and Hugendube feature my book as well.

In which languages will it be?

The book is available in English and German!

Where can I order it?

It is available on Amazon. In case the link does not work in your country, just search for “Pilot Patrick Book” Hugendubel and Thalia have it also available in their online shops and bookstores in Germany.

Will it be available worldwide?

Almost. You can get it in every country which offers Amazon. In case it is not available in your specific country and you desperately want to have it then please send me an email to book@pilotpatrick.com and I will forward it to my publisher.

My project of the heart is revealed and I hope you like the fact that I released a book for you! Trust me the biggest secret is not yet revealed. Order my book now!

Leave me a comment below once you have ordered your piece and do not forget to like the blog post! 🙂

Safe and healthy travels and happy landings!

what means the SPF

What does the SPF of sun protection really mean?

„SPF50+ no wonder that you don’t get tainted“ I have heard this statement numerous times. It seems like that there is a lot of unclarity about the SPF among you my Aviators 😉 Welcome aboard my blog! In this article I explain you what the SPF means. I tried an outdoor activity I have not done before and I was surprised how much it actually has to do with aviation.

Outdoors in the sun

It is summer in Europe and the sunlight is really aggressive and can harm your health easily. Also in Germany! That’s why it is absolutely mandatory to use suncare to protect yourself from the damaging UV-A and UV-B and the high-energy visible (HEVIS) light. A big mistake: Don’t underestimate the intensity of the sunlight. You should not only protect yourself when outdoors in the sunny but also when you spend time in the shade. I was p

Playing golf for the very first time

I am always open to try new activities. When Eucerin and the magazine Golf’n’Style asked me if I wanted to play golf I was not really sure if I would enjoy it that much. There are definitely other activities I would prefer to try out but I am not the person who judges quickly. I thought I would give it a try since I liked to play mini-golf as a teenager. So without any expectations I drove to the Fleesensee which is a 2 hours drive north of Berlin.  The golf course is located on the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte which is a famous region in Germany to spend your free time and holidays.

The weather on that day was on point. Sunny with a light breeze. 100% suncare weather. Last time I had a club in my hand is years ago. So I was a little bit nervous because I wanted to show a good performance to you and my golf coach. I twas not just any golf coach, it was Sven Strüver, a campion and famous in the golf circuit. This fact and that I recorded a YouTube video of my day at Golf Fleesensee did not really help me.

My first hole on a golf course

Before going on the golf course to play the first hole, we started practising on the driving range. I placed the first golf ball on the tee. Sven corrected my posture, told me where to look at and how to swing the club. Without thinking too much I gave it a try. I hit the golf ball and it took off the ground and it flew for a while until it landed back in the green grass. Beginners luck! After some more time on the driving range Sven said you are ready for your first hole. He seemed to be quite impressed by my performance.

Check out my YouTube video to watch me playing my first ever hole.

What does the SPF really mean?

The comments below one of my recent posts about sun protection on my Instagram channel shocked me. I had to read a lot of false statements about the Sun Protection Factor (SPF). Ready for the simple answer?

It tells you how long the sun’s UV radiation would take to redden your skin when using the product versus the amount of time without any suncare. So ideally, with SPF 50 it would take you 50 times longer to burn than if you weren’t wearing sunscreen. Contrary to some assumptions the SPF rather states the length of the protection and not the intensity. It’s important to apply the product thoroughly (be careful not to miss any bits) and to reapply it generously every two hours.

Eucerin Sun protection is available in three different levels of protection: high (30 to 50) and very high (50+).

The sunlight is not always our best friend. I am proud to be a sun protection ambassador to reduce the sun-induced skin damages of my Aviators!

The new revolutionary suncare

As you know I am a big fan of the Eucerin Oil Control Sun Face Gel-creme because of the anti-shine effect and the ultra light texture. So far the Oil Control was only available for the face, now Eucerin launched this product for the body as well. Eucerin revolutionizes the market with the Eucerin Oil Control Sun Dry Touch Body Gel-Cream .

Key properties: ultra light texture, absorbs quickly, non-greasy, non sticky, 0% residue, extra water-resistant, sweat-resistant, anti-sand, lightly-fragranced

Sun Gel-Cream Dry Touch Sensitive Protect

The days are over that the sunscreen leaves residues and you look like a white ghost after applying it. As pleasant to use as it is effective, this ultra-light gel cream sunscreen absorbs quickly leaving 0% residue and an immediate dry touch finish. It offers superior protection for all skin types.

Eucerin’s Advanced Spectral Technology offers high UVA/UVB protection and HEVIS light defense. The sunscreen also supports skin’s own DNA repair mechanism and its Oil Control Technology, with mattifying pigments, leaves an immediate dry touch finish on skin. It’s clinically and dermatologically proven to be suitable for all skin types including sensitive, oily and acne-prone skin.

What does anti-sand mean?

Anti-sand means that sand is less likely to stick to your skin when using this product. In consumer research, 95% of respondents agreed that sand did not stick to their skin after application. This is because Eucerin Sun Gel-Cream Dry Touch Sensitive Protect SPF 50+ is an ultra-light formula which absorbs quickly and is non-sticky and non-greasy.

How is aviation connected to golf?

My gold coach Sven Strüver noted that it was perfect weather to play golf. He said it is sailing weather thus the golf ball will fly forever. It not only depends on how hard and fast you hit the golf ball with the club but the weather conditions play an important role on the performance as well. Like in aviation, the flight path is dependent on air density, air pressure and humidity. Hotter air means less air density and drier air means less humidity which means the golf ball is exposed to less resistance during the flight. The same applies to the flight performance of a plane. You also have to take into account the wind speed and direct when you plan to reach the flag. A lead angle is required into the wind which is identical to flying a plane to a specific point.

What was your worse sunburn you ever had? Let me know your painful story in a comment below and don’t forget to like my blog post: “What does the SPF of sun protection really mean? To avoid a sunburn in the future: Make sure to apply enough sun protection. Think of the size of a golf ball. This is the quantity you need to cover your entire body.

lack of diversity in the cockpit

Why is there a lack of diversity in the cockpit?

Dear Aviator,

do you still remember the good old days in aviation before the novel coronavirus hit us? It was a booming industry with a constantly increasing demand for air travel, new jets with the most modern technology that could fly to the furthest destinations, and business class which could have been first class. Airlines were bracing for a severe pilot shortage. For now, this problem is solved but for the long term, it will arise again but why? The lack of diversity in the cockpit could be the reason.

Check out my YouTube channel PilotPatrick for more exciting videos about my trips around the world!

Thank you, Corona

Covid-19 came around the corner and destroyed aviation in a second. In one second the demand for pilots was gone. Even worse bankruptcy, lower demand, smaller fleets, low liquidity have been causing a lot of pilots to lose their jobs already.

I think it will take about two years until we are back at the same level as before Corona. We can expect during this period to be very low, with almost no demand for pilots. Step by step the demand will rise again. Let’s hope it will only be a very long low before aviation takes off again to the same level. In case no other factor will torpedo the business, the 2019 Boeing Pilot & Technician Outlook projects that 804,000 new civil aviation pilots are required to maintain the world fleet over the next 20 years.

Why do airlines have to brace for a pilot shortage?

There are many reasons for the anticipated pilot shortage. It is a mix of increasing regulation, growing demand for air travel, fleet growth, and an aging workforce. Pilots have to stop flying commercially latest with the age of 65. But there’s one cause that also offers a solution:

The industry has long struggled to recruit women, people of color, and members of other marginalized groups.

The lack of diversity in the cockpit

In 2008 I started my training to become a pilot. At the time I already noticed the lack of diversity in aviation. Back then the flight school was called Intercockpit, which is now the European Flight Academy, a subsidiary of Lufthansa Aviation Training. My course consisted of 25 men and only one woman!

During one of my first lessons with the DA20, my flight instructor looked at me and said:

“Patrick, you have to know: Women and black people have no place in the cockpit!”.

At that moment I was more busy concentrating on the approach than thinking about his discriminating statement.

The lack of diversity continued with my first pilot job. It was a small charter company with business jets in Berlin. The fleet consisted of about 10 jets and only white men were working in the cockpit. Not one single woman in the cockpit only in the cabin.  My second private jet employer had a fleet that was double the size and had at least two women flying.

I found that women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ community were significantly underrepresented, this did not change when I switched to a big german airline in 2016. Less then 3% of the flight crew were women and I have not seen a black colleague. After flying for 6 years, it was the first time I flew with a female captain.

Current statistics

These are really no exceptions. Statistics prove my numbers. A review of the latest Civil Airmen Statistics indicates that a little over 4% of Airline Transport Certificate holders – the required certification to fly for a major carrier – are women. No major U.S. carrier hired a female pilot until 1973.

The situation is even worse for African Americans, who were not hired to pilot a commercial airplane until the 1960s. Things changed only because of a six-year battle against Continental Airlines waged by Marlon Green, who filed a discrimination complaint against the carrier. In 1963, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in his favor, paving the way for the first black pilot, David Ellsworth Harris, whom American Airlines hired in 1964. Green would follow suit at Continental in 1965.

Often their mere presence has been used to symbolize progress in diversifying the industry. (source: the conversation)

Helen Richey was the first female commercial pilot in 1934.

diversity in aviation

Captain David Harris was the first African American Airline commercial pilot hired by a major US airline in 1964 and was the first to be promoted to Captain.

Why is there a lack of diversity in the cockpit?

I have met great, open-minded, and modern thinking pilots. Most of them belonged to the younger generation. Unfortunately, there is still a huge percentage of pilots that are not tolerant and have a mindset like my flight instructor in Zadar.

To understand the roots of the issue: He was over 60 at that time. At the beginning of his aviation career he probably never flew with a single woman or an open LGBTQ member. When he became a captain, the WHO still considered being homosexual as a sickness. The authority gap in the cockpit was immense which was later found to deteriorate safety.

It is also a perception problem, where women are not seen as authoritative enough for positions like a captain of an aircraft.

The white male dominance

I had to experience a lot of sexist behavior against women. Pilots used their white male dominance in this job to feel superior. I had to listen to so many bad jokes about women and other minority groups. in the cockpit. I was getting sick of it and I had a hard time keeping calm because I feared when I would speak up a good atmosphere in the cockpit would infringe safety.

It is like a bowl of tomato soup. You put only a little bit too much salt in it is over-salted. The same applies to the behavior, beliefs, and attitude of some pilots. This has caused the cultures in aviation not to be very inclusive.

This domination of white men paired with known intolerance probably intimidates minor groups from pursuing a career in aviation.

Another barrier for those who lack resources and support. The cost of flight training can range from US$50,000 to upwards of $100,000.

What could lead to more acceptance?

In the end, corona could aggravate the pilot shortage problem in the future even more. The demand will eventually come back to an extreme high. But then we most probably experience an even greater lack of pilots, because of uncertainty during the crisis fewer people started their training to become a pilot.

I believe a stronger focus on attracting a diverse workforce and embracing a more inclusive culture is pivotal to ensuring there are enough pilots as we return back to the skies.

It is terrifying to see that some pilots believe that they are superior just because of their profession and believe that they are “flying gods”. I have been accused of disenfranchising the job because I have shown that I have feelings and that it is ok to be “colorful” on social media.

The new generation of pilots will help to lose the old stigmata and outdated bodies of thought.

Positive mind. Positive life. Happy landings.

Aviation meets Diet: How to reach your body goals without refraining from eating pizza

Dear Aviator,

I did a fasting period of one week. In this time I lost about 6 kgs. I looked really skinny at the end. Six weeks later I gained over 7 kgs and I look stronger and more muscular than ever. You were extremely surprised about my fast transition and you were wondering how did I do it. Exercising is one key to be successful but there is another important aspect you have to consider: the diet. PATFIT is an expert on this topic. In an interview, I am revealing his secrets. How to reach your body goals without refraining from eating pizza.

how to reach your body goals

Patrik introduce yourself!

My name is Patrik and I’m 27 years old. Originally, I’m from beautiful Slovakia near the Hungarian border and I live in Germany since I am 5 years old. In 2015 I decided to start my own business and began working as a personal trainer. I quickly realized that I can reach a lot more people online. That’s why I decided to devote myself entirely to the online area in 2017. Since 2019 we have been helping entrepreneurs, self-employed people & executives successfully losing weight in their everyday life, despite consuming alcohol, pizza, pasta, chocolate and so on.

how to reach your body goals

How did we get to know each other?

Patrick and I met through social media. I guess Patrick had around 250k back then. He was looking for an online coach with whom he could achieve his physical goals. We met in real life, shared opinions on how we could collaborate. Next to the business part, a friendship developed as well.

What exactly distinguishes you from other online coaches in the D-A-CH area?

My concepts are only suitable for entrepreneurs, self-employed, and employees in management positions. My company helps entrepreneurs lose weight and build long-term diet concepts that are appropriate for everyday life. Above all, we make sure that people don’t have to look after specific meal times. Nobody has to give up food or even end up hungry at the end of the day. We especially make sure that our concepts are fun and easy to integrate into everyday life.

What is the video with you and pilotpatrick about?

It’s about staying fit and healthy during the Corona crisis. We all know that sport is an important role. Since most of you have to deal with closet gyms. We want to motivate you and give suggestions so that you can get fit during the crisis and stay healthy. Additionally, it will strengthen your immune system.  Watch the video here

What kind of diet do you recommend? How to reach your body goals?

I’m a big fan of carbohydrates. Bread, rice, potatoes, and pasta should never be missing in a diet. You should eat very balanced. Fruits and vegetables every day. Blend an apple, a banana with berries and add milk you have a superheated shake that is easily prepared. A mixed salad with a good dressing has never harmed anyone in the evening. Last but not least, don’t forget the protein! Fresh chicken, beef, and fish. (Organic please) For vegetarians, I recommend tofu, low-fat cheese, a high-quality whey protein, and veggie protein powder as a protein source.

how to reach your body goals

Why do you think most diets fail?

There are several reasons why self-employed people do not follow a diet. Almost nobody can stick to fixed times. Most diets are tied to meal times. The diet program is doomed to fail as soon as you don’t keep track of the timing. Almost nobody can eat consistently at 8 a.m., eat at 1 pm and 7 pm for 365 Days. Often unexpected events come in between and then you forget to have lunch or breakfast. The second point why diets fail is that people have to refrain from eating sweets and delicious food during the diet program. You can cope with that for usually 2 weeks butter you feel like having a piece of chocolate or a pizza.

The diet program

I created a diet program that is systematically integrated into your everyday life and I show people a strategy to get your desired weight with alcohol, chocolate, pizza, and co. The third point is that most people believe is that you have to refrain from drinking alcohol to lose weight. Most diets have a strict alcohol ban which I cannot understand. At the end of the day alcohol are calories thus energy. So if you cut calories in the form of carbohydrates then you may incorporate alcohol in your diet plan. Wine, beer or even a cocktail is no problem but as always the quantity is crucial.

My current diet

After I returned back from Cape Town in March, quarantine measures were in force. A great moment to fast and to heal my body with the detoxification which is linked to it. Check out my blog “Try This Out During Quarantine” for more details about my fasting period. I lost a lot of weight. About 6 kgs in total and I looked really skinny. After breaking the fasting I started following a different diet as before since I was stagnating the past three years. I was not able to gain more weight and more muscles. My goal was to change this but this meant I needed to alter my diet since I was doing already wright lifting.

Diet is not the right term, I would rather call it an eating habit or routine. Only a few weeks later you could observe major progress in building muscles. Seven weeks after fasting I gained over 8 kgs again respectively about 3,5 kgs of muscles. You were really surprised about my progress and being honest, me too.

How did I do that?

I am not following the metabolic diet which means I mean eating a lot of protein the before. Every day the intake of protein is high. With my body weight I would need to eat over 400g of protein a day. This is almost impossible. Currently I eat about 200g – 250g of protein. On workout days it is moderate carbohydrates (in the morning/before and post-workout) and low fat. On days without a workout it is the opposite. Low carbohydrates and moderate fats. This diet evens forgive way I can even have a pizza.
