what means the SPF

What does the SPF of sun protection really mean?

Anzeige

„SPF50+ no wonder that you don’t get tainted“ I have heard this statement numerous times. It seems like that there is a lot of unclarity about the SPF among you my Aviators 😉 Welcome aboard my blog! In this article I explain you what the SPF means. I tried an outdoor activity I have not done before and I was surprised how much it actually has to do with aviation.

Outdoors in the sun

It is summer in Europe and the sunlight is really aggressive and can harm your health easily. Also in Germany! That’s why it is absolutely mandatory to use suncare to protect yourself from the damaging UV-A and UV-B and the high-energy visible (HEVIS) light. A big mistake: Don’t underestimate the intensity of the sunlight. You should not only protect yourself when outdoors in the sunny but also when you spend time in the shade. I was p

Playing golf for the very first time

I am always open to try new activities. When Eucerin and the magazine Golf’n’Style asked me if I wanted to play golf I was not really sure if I would enjoy it that much. There are definitely other activities I would prefer to try out but I am not the person who judges quickly. I thought I would give it a try since I liked to play mini-golf as a teenager. So without any expectations I drove to the Fleesensee which is a 2 hours drive north of Berlin.  The golf course is located on the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte which is a famous region in Germany to spend your free time and holidays.

The weather on that day was on point. Sunny with a light breeze. 100% suncare weather. Last time I had a club in my hand is years ago. So I was a little bit nervous because I wanted to show a good performance to you and my golf coach. I twas not just any golf coach, it was Sven Strüver, a campion and famous in the golf circuit. This fact and that I recorded a YouTube video of my day at Golf Fleesensee did not really help me.

My first hole on a golf course

Before going on the golf course to play the first hole, we started practising on the driving range. I placed the first golf ball on the tee. Sven corrected my posture, told me where to look at and how to swing the club. Without thinking too much I gave it a try. I hit the golf ball and it took off the ground and it flew for a while until it landed back in the green grass. Beginners luck! After some more time on the driving range Sven said you are ready for your first hole. He seemed to be quite impressed by my performance.

Check out my YouTube video to watch me playing my first ever hole.

What does the SPF really mean?

The comments below one of my recent posts about sun protection on my Instagram channel shocked me. I had to read a lot of false statements about the Sun Protection Factor (SPF). Ready for the simple answer?

It tells you how long the sun’s UV radiation would take to redden your skin when using the product versus the amount of time without any suncare. So ideally, with SPF 50 it would take you 50 times longer to burn than if you weren’t wearing sunscreen. Contrary to some assumptions the SPF rather states the length of the protection and not the intensity. It’s important to apply the product thoroughly (be careful not to miss any bits) and to reapply it generously every two hours.

Eucerin Sun protection is available in three different levels of protection: high (30 to 50) and very high (50+).

The sunlight is not always our best friend. I am proud to be a sun protection ambassador to reduce the sun-induced skin damages of my Aviators!

The new revolutionary suncare

As you know I am a big fan of the Eucerin Oil Control Sun Face Gel-creme because of the anti-shine effect and the ultra light texture. So far the Oil Control was only available for the face, now Eucerin launched this product for the body as well. Eucerin revolutionizes the market with the Eucerin Oil Control Sun Dry Touch Body Gel-Cream .

Key properties: ultra light texture, absorbs quickly, non-greasy, non sticky, 0% residue, extra water-resistant, sweat-resistant, anti-sand, lightly-fragranced

Sun Gel-Cream Dry Touch Sensitive Protect

The days are over that the sunscreen leaves residues and you look like a white ghost after applying it. As pleasant to use as it is effective, this ultra-light gel cream sunscreen absorbs quickly leaving 0% residue and an immediate dry touch finish. It offers superior protection for all skin types.

Eucerin’s Advanced Spectral Technology offers high UVA/UVB protection and HEVIS light defense. The sunscreen also supports skin’s own DNA repair mechanism and its Oil Control Technology, with mattifying pigments, leaves an immediate dry touch finish on skin. It’s clinically and dermatologically proven to be suitable for all skin types including sensitive, oily and acne-prone skin.

What does anti-sand mean?

Anti-sand means that sand is less likely to stick to your skin when using this product. In consumer research, 95% of respondents agreed that sand did not stick to their skin after application. This is because Eucerin Sun Gel-Cream Dry Touch Sensitive Protect SPF 50+ is an ultra-light formula which absorbs quickly and is non-sticky and non-greasy.

How is aviation connected to golf?

My gold coach Sven Strüver noted that it was perfect weather to play golf. He said it is sailing weather thus the golf ball will fly forever. It not only depends on how hard and fast you hit the golf ball with the club but the weather conditions play an important role on the performance as well. Like in aviation, the flight path is dependent on air density, air pressure and humidity. Hotter air means less air density and drier air means less humidity which means the golf ball is exposed to less resistance during the flight. The same applies to the flight performance of a plane. You also have to take into account the wind speed and direct when you plan to reach the flag. A lead angle is required into the wind which is identical to flying a plane to a specific point.

What was your worse sunburn you ever had? Let me know your painful story in a comment below and don’t forget to like my blog post: “What does the SPF of sun protection really mean? To avoid a sunburn in the future: Make sure to apply enough sun protection. Think of the size of a golf ball. This is the quantity you need to cover your entire body.

Safe travels and happy landings!

corona vacation

What is it like to spend a vacation in Croatia in the times of Corona?

 Anzeige

Dear Aviators,
to be honest I was a bit worried to go traveling again after we had the lockdown in Germany and borders were closed. Numerous questions came to my mind when I thought about my first vacation in times of Corona. Is it really safe? Does it even make sense? Will the restrictions impair my vacation? What are the safety measurements in a foreign country? You might have the same mixed feelings when you think about your next trip. In this blog post / report I will share with you my impressions during my latest trip to Croatia.

Dubrovnik Airport

Coastline of Dubrovnik

Old Town of Dubrovnik

Traveling by airplane

I was curious to find out how air travel will be during a pandemic. I got a little glimpse of it when I flew on my way back from Australia via China to Germany in the beginning of February. Passengers started to wear masks and the service on board was tremendously reduced. (full video here on YouTube) Now a face mask is mandatory during the flight and there is almost no food and drink service. Direct flights are also reduced from Berlin due to Corona. So to get to Dubrovnik (DBV) I had to fly from Vienna (VIE) with Austrian Airlines.

It was great to observe that Corona has not only negative aspects. Flying has never been so easy going: No major crowds at the airport, quick security checks, no pushing of other passengers. Instead smaller and clean airplanes, respectful passengers, no panic while disembarking and everyone is trying to keep distance from others. Some measurements seem awkward but it is great to see everyone is obeying them.

Staying at the Rixos Premium Dubrovnik organized by Turkfluencer

Direct Ocean front

What to expect at the hotel?

Last time I flew to Dubrovnik I was still a flight student back in 2008. So I was thrilled to come back to re-explore the region. I stayed in the Rixos Premium Hotel Dubrovnik, which is situated at the waterfront not far from the famous old town. Waking up in the morning overlooking the calm Adrian Sea and having a coffee on the terrace lets you forget about all the terrible things happening in the world right now.

Covid-19 measurements in the hotel

The hotel staff wore masks. There are plenty of stations to disinfect your hands. At the buffet restaurant you were required to wear a face mask and gloves but besides that you did not have to.

I really enjoyed that all facilities of the hotel, like the outdoor pool, indoor pool, sauna, bars and all the food outlets were completely open. The Rixos hotel really spoiled me with their Turkish hospitality. I enjoyed a dinner show at Umi Teppanyaki, Dry aged meat at the Turquoise restaurant and a romantic dinner in their open air fish restaurant  by the sea.

Are restaurants open?

Most of the restaurants in the city were open even with a fewer number of tourists which normally would visit during the summer. Make sure to visit restaurants outside of your hotel as well. 80% of the people are dependent on tourism in Croatia. To go outside for dinner to support local businesses like the Gverovic Orsan restaurant, a traditional mediterranean restaurant which is also one of the oldest ones in Dubrovnik. Their signature dish is the black risotto and during all meals you can enjoy stunning views of the Adria. Don’t miss trying fresh oysters from Croatia.

Protection is key

The face mask has become a mandatory accessory in our daily lives. You need to wear a mask whenever you get into an enclosed public building in Croatia. You are supposed to keep at least 1,5 meter to others but this is almost impossible in the narrow streets  and small houses of the old town.

Please do not to forget your other safe companion: sun protection. As you know I have a long lasting partnership with Eucerin to spread the awareness of the importance to protect yourself from the sun.

Why should you use suncare?
First of all not to get a painful sunburn. Secondly to lower the chances of getting skin cancer. Solely in Germany, 200.000 people became diagnosed with skin cancer for the first time in 2016. Additionally, the sun is the reason for many other skin damages. You should protect yourself during any #sunnymoment and it is never too late to start with it!

For your health and beauty

I never really thought about it, the UV- Light and HEV- Light does not only influence the healthiness of the skin, but also the aging process. The research of Eucerin revealed that the high-energy visible light (HEV) induces free radicals which also cause visible signs of skin aging and hyperpigmentation. About 90% of the visible skin aging is caused by UV- Light and HEV- Light.

Three easy tips for the proper protection

  1. The right product: Find the right product for you and your skin type. Eucerin Sun Protection has a huge product variety thus meets your age, preference, and needs.
  2. The right amount: Think of the size of a golf ball. That is the quantity you need to cover your whole body.
  3. Think twice: Best is to apply sunscreen twice, so you don’t miss out on any unprotected spots on your skin.

What are my favorite products?

Eucerin offers a wide range of sunscreen products for any age, skin type and occasion.
For the face: SUN OIL CONTROL FACE GEL-CREME
For the body: SUN OIL CONTROL BODY DRY TOUCH (NEW) and TRANSPARENT DRY TOUCH (refreshing)

All three products have an ultra-light texture and dry really fast on the skin. A big plus is that they are not as sticky as you know it from other suncare products. Additionally the Oil Control products have a mattifying effect so your skin is less shiny for your vacation photos.

Activities in Dubrovnik

Now it is the time to discover and re-explore  European cities which are normally over crowded with people. Normally, Dubrovnik is packed with tourists during high season. Thousands of day visitors come by cruise ships and it is hard to enjoy the full beauty of the city. In the last two years the city became even more famous because Games of Thrones and Star Wars used the scenic city as their movie set. This is summer, it is all different. I spotted only a few tourists strolling through the old town. I can recommend booking a city tour by @experiencedubrovnik, the official tourism board of the city and do the walk on top of the city wall.

Fun fact: Did you know that Dubrovnik was the first city to have a quarantine?
Back in the days mariner returning from their trips had to isolate themselves in a building for 40 days before they were allowed to enter the city. They never had the black death.

The Old Town Dubrovnik

What can you do?

I decided to do activities which did not require me to be surrounded by a lot of people.

  • Cable Car ride to have stunning views of the city, the Adrian Sea and the islands surrounding Dubrovnik. Do this prior sunset for the best light and pleasant temperatures.
  • A private boat trip. I chartered a Jeanneau 30 boat with @Dubrovnikboats for the full day. My skipper Frano showed me the old town from the waterside and took me to some beautiful bays at the Elaphite islands to go swimming, cliff jumping and diving into caves. Be sure to stop at Bowa restaurant for lunch.

  • Day trip to Montenegro. @finestluxurytours from Dubrovnik took me ona full day trip to show me the highlights of Montenegro. Within 10 hours I visited the picture perfect cities Perast, Kotor, Budva and Porto Montenegro. “At birth of the planet, the most beautiful encounter between land and sea must have been on the Montenegrin coast line” Lord Byron.

Did Corona impair the quality of my vacation?

At no time did I have the impression that Corona impaired the quality of my vacation. Moreover, the hotel was not that crowded, reservations were not required for restaurants, less waiting time for attractions, the city was less crowded and activities were more affordable. The only thing I was worried about was that Croatia will be determined as a risk country which would require me to self isolate myself when returning to Germany.

Hello my Aviator,

after one year of absence, I finally made it back to my happy place Barcelona. I really missed this city because it feels like a second home for me. Unfortunately, my schedule did not allow me to stay more than three days. In this blog post, I will show you my personal highlights and share my insider tips of Barcelona for your next trip.

Barcelona my happy place

Barcelona is a great city for sightseeing. Around every corner, you can discover a new spectacular place. I recommend renting a scooter for your stay. This time I was cruising through the city with a Vespa of ViaVespa. A scooter gives you so much freedom to go to different places in a minimum amount of time.

Where to sleep?

Two years ago I lived for three months in Barcelona, I stayed in a shared apartment in the historic Gotico. It was a great experience to live right in the center of this vibrant city. Due to a new cockpit job, I was forced to move back to Berlin. For this mini-vacation, I decided to stay at the 5 star Arts Hotel Barcelona close to the beach. Its unique building characterizes the skyline of Barcelona and was first opened during the Olympics in 1992. The views it grants from the rooms, club lounge and the spa are exceptional.

Stay protected at the pool

The hotel recently opened a newly designed outside area with an infinity pool. Now you can overlook the beach and ocean while taking a swim. I love to cool down in the water and to relax in the sun. But not without the correct sun protection. At this stage, I want to remind you how important it is to use sunscreen to protect yourself from sunlight.

First of all not to get a painful sunburn. Secondly to lower the chances of getting skin cancer. Solely in Germany, 200.000 people became diagnosed with skin cancer for the first time in 2016. Eucerin Sun Protection offers a wide range of sunscreen products for any age, skin type and occasion. Two of my favorite products is the “SUN OIL CONTROL FACE GEL-CREME” for the face and the “SENSITIVE PROTECT TRANSPARENT SUN SPRAY“. My face gets shiny really fast and is really sensitive. The “Sun oil control face gel-creme” is made for such skin types and is light and dries really fast. The transparent sun spray for the body has an ultra-light texture and is not sticky. Two great products for a day by the pool.

What to do?

Bunkers del Carmel: A must visit if you want to enjoy one of the best views of Barcelona and the sea.  Turó del Carmel is a hill with a bunker on top. Best time is during sunset and sunrise. Take something to drink and don't think you will be alone ;-) The entrance is still free.

Casa Batlló: Barcelona is the city of Gaudi. His architecture is world famous. One of the highlights is the Casa Batlló. I have walked by this townhouse many times before because it is centrally located on the Passeig de Gracia. If you like the outside of the building you should dare look inside. It is really impressive to discover the passion Gaudí has put into this building. I literally was overwhelmed by the beauty that I got glossy eyes.

Insider tip: For most famous sights, you can buy tickets online. This way you can skip long ques at the entrance.

Boat trip: One of my highlights was a boat trip with Barcelona desde el Mar. I have seen Barcelona many times from the cockpit but to discover this amazing city from the sea was a unique experience. It gave me a whole new perspective of Barcelona. My little cruise lasted around 2 hours and I enjoyed a beautiful sunset from the sea.

Where to eat?

Barcelona offers diverse dining options. There is much more than tapas. Catalans eat late. Either be early or make a reservation. Here are my all time favorite places to go:

Väcka: Vegan restaurant and Cafe. Try their vegan classic burger and have a raw treat. Gracia

Teresa’s Carles: Vegetarian food and juices (only indoor/more for dinner) El Raval

Flax and Kale: Healthy restaurant offering a diverse menu (all day) Make a reservation and request a table on their outdoor rooftop garden. Don't miss the brunch on the weekend. El Raval

Surf House: Restaurant right by the beach. The menu offers healthy food but also tasty burger for a cheat day. Try their waffles! Barceloneta

Vinitus: In my opinion one of the best tapas restaurant in Barcelona. After 8 pm it gets really busy. You can choose your fresh fish from the display at the bar. Eixample

Which season is best to visit Barcelona?

Barcelona is great all year around. If you want to enjoy the hot weather at the beach then you need to visit during the summer months. But if you come to do sightseeing and to discover the city, then I recommend avoiding the high season. That way touristic places are less crowded and waiting times are less.

Insider tip: Visit Barcelona in the spring or late summer. My favorite months was October. Of course, the weather is not that stable, but the city is less crowded and you have the chance to go wave surfing.

[/spb_text_block] [spb_image image="19313" image_size="full" frame="noframe" caption_pos="below" remove_rounded="yes" fullwidth="no" overflow_mode="none" link_target="_self" lightbox="no" intro_animation="none" animation_delay="200" width="1/1" el_position="first last"][/spb_image] [spb_text_block animation="none" animation_delay="0" simplified_controls="yes" custom_css_percentage="no" padding_vertical="0" padding_horizontal="0" margin_vertical="0" custom_css="margin-top: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px;" border_size="0" border_styling_global="default" width="1/1" el_position="first last"]

Fantastic weather, interesting sights, cultural events, the beach and of course friendly people make Barcelona a perfect vacation spot. You can choose from a great variety of restaurants and hotels. The prices for food are decent, but the hotel prices can be expensive during high season. My dream is still to live in my two favorite cities Berlin and Barcelona!
