A Night In A B747 Hotel! Jumbo Stay Stockholm Review

Deaaaaaar Aviaaaaators!

It was not a dream when I woke up after a night on board a B747. Departure and arrival airport was Arlanda Airport in Stockholm so I did not fly anywhere with the Queen of the skies. I got to stay at one of the most iconic hotels around the world. It is a retired B747 aircraft from 1976 which was converted into a hotel/hostel. It’s definitely a must for all aviation lovers. I’m so excited to share my experience with you and maybe you will have the chance to stay there one day as well.

A Hotel Inside A B747 ✈️

Jumbo StayThat’s the name of the hostel/hotel inside a decommissioned Boeing 747-200 at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Sweden. It officially opened in January 2009. I visited the Jumbo 3 years ago during a layover but did not stay there at the time.

Originally the aircraft was built for Singapore Airlines in 1976, and was later sold to Pan American World Airways. Later, it operated for Cathay Pacific Airways and Garuda Indonesia. Its last air operator was Transjet, a Swedish charter airline based at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, that unfortunately went bankrupt in 2002.

Rooms & Suites 🛌 

Jumbo Stay offers 33 rooms with most of them having four beds in each room. All together, the hostel offers 76 beds; one of the more luxurious is to be found at the upper flight deck. That is the ultimate highlight of the hotel.  If you want to stay there, you need to book months in advance!

You can even stay in the engines 🙂

All rooms have access to bathrooms in the corridor, apart from the Cockpit suite, the Black Box suite and one single room which boasts its own shower and WC. Please consider that not all rooms have their own bathroom when you book your room. In my opinion, you should not save here! Unfortunately, the cockpit suite was occupied that night, but I still had the chance to look at it after check out and  decided I must return to sleep to experience a night there 🙂

“Breakfast” 🍳

It is an experience staying at the Jumbo Stay but you would definitely not go there for an amazing breakfast. It is super simple but having coffee and a Swedish crispy brioche in the nose of a B747 does upgrade it a lot. You can always head to the Terminal, which is only a few minutes away, for more food.

The Conversion 🏨 

Following a restoration that began in January 2008 and cost the equivalent of more than US$3,000,000, the aircraft was towed to its new permanent location, on a grass-covered mound, just outside the perimeter of the airport in Stockholm.  Its interior had been almost entirely changed, although a number of its features, such as the flight controls and some of the original seats and windows, had been retained.

At its permanent site, the aircraft was mounted on a concrete foundation, and its landing gear was secured in two steel cradles.  Additionally, a set of metal stairs and a lift were installed at its main entrance on its left side. I like that they made the left wing accessible so people can walk all the way to the wing tip to have a unique view they would normally not get from a B747. On top, visitors can access the upper deck behind the cockpit suite. Here they will find the first class lounge with the original seats from 1976.

My Feedback 🙋🏼‍♂️

It is definitely not a 5 star hotel, but the experience sleeping on board a B747 aircraft, makes it more than 5 stars. The hotel is now over 13 years old, so it needs some restoration and repair, which is quite noticeable, but I overlooked that because it is so unique and iconic.

If you only have a few hours at Arlanda Airport you can still visit the Jumbo Stay and have a coffee in the cafe. It is open to the general public – not exclusive to staying guests only. Go and stay there and make some long lasting memories! Trust me, you will for sure have a good night’s sleep on board.

Fear Of Flying - My 10 Tips To Become a More Relaxed Flyer

Hello my Aviator,

it makes me really sad to hear that many of you are anxious to fly and cannot enjoy travelling by plane! That is why I want to give you an update on my fear of flying blog post. I actually could write a whole book about this subject. I am passionate to help you to feel more comfortable on board. Hopefully, my 10 tips to manage this anxiety will help you so I see you much more relaxed up in the sky.

Fear of flying

In fact, a survey suggests that 43 percent of people have at least some fear of flying and around 9 percent are so afraid that they would not go on a flight. Now I understand why I receive so many comments and messages asking me what they can do against their fear of flying. In this article, I want to help you as much as possible to get over that fear which is also known as aviophobia. I hope that my personal words as a pilot are more persuasive than those of a third person who is not involved in the aviation industry as much as I am.

There is no reason to panic!

During my research for this blog post, I found out that the most common reason for the fear of flying is the fear to crash. But the probability for that is vanishing low. Let me mention them again to get an idea of how safe flying really is.

It is the safest means of transportation but also the most dangerous one at the same time.

Flying through the air with over 800 km/h with tons of ignitable fuel. In the first place, this does not sound really comforting. And because of that, we took all measures to make it to the safest way of travel.

The probability of your plane going down is around one in 5.4 million. (according to The Economist) It is more likely to be attacked by a shark or even killed by the flu. Travelling in a car is 100 times more deadly than flying in a plane. Despite the high profile plane crashes in the past, it has never been safer to fly. So are you also afraid when driving in the car?

Anxiety originates from ignorance!

I think the anxiety can originate from ignorance not understanding the complex system of aviation. This might trigger “what if?” catastrophic thoughts.

This starts with the ignorance of the systems of the aeroplane. Certain noises and normal flight manoeuvres can already cause unease. For example noise of the brakes, landing gear, the flaps, and the engines. Especially during takeoff, you experience a lot of different ones. The engines run at a high thrust setting, the runway might a little bumpy and the landing gear retracts with a loud “bang”. Trust me all those noises are normal. Most of you are scared of turbulences and think that they are dangerous. Please trust me they belong to the normal path of flight. Aircraft are built to withstand turbulence with ease.

Pilots always try to avoid turbulence and in case we encounter them we try to find a different level to escape the area of turbulence. This causes a spool up or down of the engines and a climb or descent to a different level.

The regulations in aviation are really strict. The authority requires that the aircraft are maintained at fixed intervals. Airlines could not afford to operate a badly maintained aircraft, which could cause them to lose their operator certificate (AOC) and of course their reputation.

Redundancy in all aspects of aviation!

Even when there happens to be a malfunction of a system, that does not mean it will end in a disaster. The aircraft are built to be flying in the air and constructed to be redundant. That means if one system fails, the aeroplane will still be safe to fly and a different system will take over it. For example, if one engine fails, the second one will keep the aeroplane in the sky and a safe landing will be possible. This is trained on regular simulator flights many times.

Maybe you have heard about the swiss cheese model before. This model of accident causation illustrates that, although many layers of defence lie between hazards and accidents. Only if there is a flaw in each layer, if aligned, can allow the accident to occur. A single mistake in one layer will not lead to an accident!

My 10 tips against the fear of flying

  1.  Choose an airline you feel safe with or you know they have a good reputation, do not book just because the ticket is cheap
  2. Arrive at the airport with enough time, so you do not get stressed additionally. Minimum 2 hours prior to departure.
  3. Book a seat with more space, e.g. at the emergency exit
  4. Try not to drink alcohol and caffeine this might intense your anxiety
  5. When boarding let the cabin crew know that you are a little bit nervous, a short chat with them can help
  6. Recall that you are safe and probability is on your side
  7. Control your breathing inhale deeply and exhale slowly: Relaaaaax!
  8. Use noise-cancelling headphones, recall that flying and systems produce loud noises, listen to relaxing music and do things that distract you (food, beverages, books, music, sleeping mask)
  9. You are not alone! Millions of people travel by plane at the same time
  10. Keep in mind that the aeroplane is built to travel through the air, turbulence is a normal path of flying,

Am I going down?

I found an app “Am I Going Down?”, which claims to calculate the odds of a disaster on a particular flight. You put in three variables: the departure and arrival airports, the airline, and the type of plane used. For example, a flight from San Francisco to London Heathrow has a probability of 1 to 3.646.151 to go down. You would have to take this flight every day for 9.989 years before it crashes. Knowing the probability, which is not even worth mentioning for your particular flight, may help with your fear of flying.

Caution Scam - My Photos And Identity Is Used To Fraud

MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY!

 I once again have to highlight a very unpleasant topic, which concerns all of us – Fraudulent behaviour targeting my beloved Aviator community.

 Since I became more popular on social media, my identity and photos have been used by criminals to commit serious crimes. Leaving nothing but broken hearts, empty bank accounts and despair for those who have been scammed. In the recent past, new and shocking fraud cases have been brought to my attention, so I will give you guidelines on how you can protect yourself and what you can do when a fraud happens to you.

I only have one profile on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Both are named @pilotpatrick and are verified accounts (blue mark behind the name) I am not using any dating platforms or any other apps to communicate with my Aviators.  My private Facebook account is with my real name and for my friends and family only. One of the greatest downsides of my social media presence is scammers. There are people who steal my identity and create profiles with my photos to scam other users. When I first found out about it, I thought that they just wanted to chat and to get some attention from the other end. I was greatly mistaken.

 My fake profiles are used to betray people and to make money out of them. Words can not describe their criminal activities on the internet. They are pathetic and I feel really sorry for all the victims. With my photos, they have managed to ruin others’ lives, made people commit felonies and managed to get a lot of money from their victims.

Different Strategies

Victims have been informing me of their stories and it is shocking to see how clever and deceitful the way the scammers operate. It is always about money and they use different strategies to scam others. I will not mention any specific details, but scammers are very good at false representation, duping people into believing they are in contact with me. 

Not only women have been betrayed, but also men, who were seeking a job in the cockpit. Their desperation was used so scammers could make money. The worst case I know about deals with a woman from New Zealand who transferred over 2000$ to pay for my landing fees. I am pretty sure there are many other cases I do not know about.

Who Is Behind The Scam?

I am always saying “they”. I can only assume, but I think that the fake profiles are created by a network. They have been using the same profile names and the same scam over and over again.

The European Union did not allow the scanning of faces online, because of data protection. This tool would recognize when a profile uses photos of a person who already exists. This would be a great advance against the fight against fake profiles. I am not the only one whose photos are being stolen.

Scammers not only destroy the reputation of online platforms, but also the reputation of the innocent person in the public eye.

What Can You Do Not To Become A Victim?

Here are some easy tips to follow to stay safe online: 

  • Never ever send money online to a person you do not know. I would never ask for money from my Aviators!!! I have no family in need.
  • Question yourself and do not be naive.
  • Don’t get fooled by what you see. Scammers have the technology to “show” a different person appears in live calls.
  • When chatting via a platform other than my official ones it is not me! 
  • Do not get blinded by love. The scammers are using the most powerful emotion, love, to scam people.
  • I have only one telephone number which is a German one.
  • I would never send official documents like licenses, passport scans, IDs to people I do not know.
  • Compare my voice with the voice and tone of the scammers.

What Can You Do When You Are A Victim?

If you became a victim of a scam and lost money or committed a felony, then I want you to do the following:

Please consult your local police department. I am NOT the person who can help you. Be aware that I feel very sorry for you and it breaks my heart that this has happened to you. 

It is very important that you do not feel ashamed. You need to have the power to speak up. This will help prevent more scams from happening in the future and more importantly, that scammers will be caught and punished. Additionally, this will increase the pressure on Messenger apps and Social Media Platforms to fight against fake profiles.

On The Media

I am not the only one whose photos are being stolen to cheat and scam others. But my case got so extreme that the media featured me in a documentary and an online newspaper article.

Instagram and Facebook are not supportive at all. Sometimes profiles (which are obviously fake) do not get deleted, or can take days for the profile to be removed.

Being a pilot is a dream job and will always be one. Unfortunately, Covid-19 not only turned our lives upside down but also many branches. The aviation and travel industry has been suffering tremendously from travel restrictions and quarantine safety measures worldwide. Consequently, there are now more pilots than jobs on the market.  Corona has not diminished the dream of becoming a pilot for so many. Should you aim to become a pilot and why should you not become a pilot? Is it a good time to pursue your dream despite the current situation? Here I give you a more extensive answer to help you in the process of finding the right decision for your future. Be prepared for the cold truth.

The Dream Of Flying

The dream of flying is as old as mankind itself. But the possibility for everyone on earth to fly like an eagle through the skies is only a few decades old. Aviation, as we know it, is still in its initial phase when considering that the desire to fly freely has always existed. Thanks to great legends and pioneers who helped make aviation what it is today, we can feel quite fortunate that we live in a time where the job as a pilot exists.

A Fast-Paced Industry

Aviation is a moving, but also a really volatile industry, with lots of ups and downs, as Corona has proven. As fast as aviation develops and changes over the years, the job of a pilot has altered as well. We still fly aircraft, but nowadays with a high level of automation, under economic pressure, an increasing number of regulations and a sky that does not seem so free anymore. I would not say that the job lost its glamour over the years, but it is a different glamour and not all jobs have it.

Would I Become A Pilot Again?

Yes! Yes and Yes!

In a recent Instagram post, I stated that you should choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life. For me, it is still the best job in the world and it does not feel like work for me (most of the time). Of course, the job also has negative aspects. It can indeed be tough, unglamorous and hard work. But in the end, the negative aspects fade behind all the positive sides of the job.

What Would I Have Done Differently?

I definitely chose the harder way to become a pilot. The entire flight training (about 70,000€) was self-funded and it did not have any guarantee after finishing my training, to get a position in the cockpit. This was quite risky because you never know how the demand for pilots will look when you complete your training; it can happen a lot in the aviation industry. In my case, I was lucky to start flying as a First Officer on a private jet, but I know about other graduates who did not find a job right away. My advice is to get into a cadet program of an airline, so you do not put yourself at financial risk.

 

Have A Plan B

I would advise that you go to college to further your education and possibly gain a degree. This would enable you to seek further employment, even in the airline industry. Especially in aviation, a plan B is essential since you depend on your license.

Why You Should NOT Become A Pilot?

Good salary, layovers, free flights, job security – these are probably aspects of why you may like to become a pilot. But the opposite applies. As I mentioned before, the job of a pilot has changed and the conditions in the airline industry have deteriorated tremendously. In the competition with low-cost airlines, major carriers had to reduce costs in all departments including the salary of aircrews. But the requirements and the complexity of the job has not decreased.

The days where you spent one week of a layover in the Caribbean, are also over. In the case of you having a layover, it is now the minimum time required at the destination before your next flight. Low-cost airlines always return to the home base to save money. For me, the pilot job is linked to travelling and layovers. That is why I could not imagine sleeping every night at home. Even though I work in the aviation industry I do not have the privilege or benefit of discounted or free flights. As the high number of bankruptcies of airlines in the European market has shown, job security is not a given.

No Air Travel Like Before Corona 

At the moment it is very difficult to assess how the aviation industry will look in the future. But I am very sure that the general demand for flights will not reach the same level as before the pandemic started. Firstly, lots of people are suffering from the crisis which means they will simply not have the means to go on a vacation. Secondly, the whole business trips scenario will change or has already changed.

Companies will think twice and decide if the budget for the business trip makes sense, or if the meeting can be done online instead. In general, most companies have been weakened throughout the crisis, which means they will have a reduced budget for travel in general. The business traveller who books expensive business class tickets will fly less, which will seriously impact the airline’s revenue.

My Honest Advice

Do not enter flight training right now!

If you are leaving high school and you want to become a pilot:

I recommend those who are leaving high school at this time, to get experience in another profession or a degree. Once completed you can reconsider your plans of becoming a pilot. This way you postpone your start date to a time where there will be a  much clearer picture of the aviation industry. Additionally, some pilots will be leaving because of retirement or a new profession. This will guarantee you a full back-up plan, in case you do not manage to get employment as a pilot.

If you have started your flight training already:

I think in this situation it makes sense to finish your course with the pilot school in order to receive your license and use every possible resource to find a job and be open to relocating.

Post Corona

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates that air traffic will have doubled within the next few years. The long term trend for the demand for aircrews exists. We as passengers, customers, and staff of the aviation industry have the power to change and shape it for the future.

Become a pilot if you have the passion and fascination for aviation. It is important to know about the negative as well as the positives, when considering becoming a pilot. Downsides exist in all industries – but with one huge difference – you become part of a world full of energy and enthusiasm, which is hard to find in any other jobs.

Skydive - Should You Dare To Jump Out Of An Airplane?

This time I don’t fly the plane

Normally I am sitting behind the controls of an airplane – to jump out of an airplane is not something I do everyday. You know that I am a thrill seeker and my last trip to Dubai satisfied my desire for adrenaline. It was one of my most thrilling vacations I ever had. But you don’t need to fly to Dubai to go skydiving. I am sure that a provider is close to your location as well. 2021 will be a difficult year to go traveling due to restrictions and quarantine regulations, so I think we will mostly concentrate on discovering our home country, trying new activities and spending a lot of time in nature.

STAY CALM and JUMP OUT OF A PLANE!

Aren’t those moments we experience intense emotions, the moments we feel most alive?! The emotions I felt during the moment I jumped out of the plane, the free fall through the air followed by the flight with the parachute blew my mind. It ranged from adrenaline rushes and excitement to nervousness and anxiety. Especially those feelings which make you worry and automatically ask  “what if” questions come into your mind and prevent us from trying out new things especially when it involves something which looks frightening at first.

Those what if questions?!

I was really looking forward to skydiving, but the moment the airplane door opened at 12,000 ft I questioned myself “what I was doing here. Am I that stupid?” The good thing is you don’t have any option other than to jump. I said to myself – in case I die it will be rather quick and it was during something I love to do: flying! The moment we left the plane all my worries were left behind in the airplane. I just felt pure joy!  After touching down I was sad that the last 4 minutes passed by so quickly and I wanted to jump again straight away.

How dangerous is it really? 

Of course nothing is 100% risk free in life. You need to trust in your professional tandem jumper and the equipment. You must follow the guidelines and listen carefully during the safety briefing to make the jump as safe as possible but in the end you need to trust the provider, the safety procedures, the professional tandem jumper and the equipment. If this does not calm you in any way, then the following numbers might.

The average probability to have an accident during skydiving is 0,026%. To die from it lies at 0,0013%. But this in perspective. The probability to die on a ride with a car is about 0,01%. This means the journey by car to the skydive experience is much more deadly than the jump itself.

The experience has a price tag

The price for a tandem jump highly depends on the location, the jump elevation and the provider. 

The first time I did skydiving was in South Africa in 2018. One of the most iconic skydiving locations is over The Palm in Dubai. The price is three times higher (approx. 340 €) than the  jump in Cape Town but the jump elevation was a lot higher and the view a lot more spectacular. The jump is priceless and the memories will last a lifetime!

How risky is flying during a pandemic? How to make it safer!

I noticed that a lot of people are scared to travel during the pandemic. Especially on board an airplane in which social distancing is not possible, people are fearing infection by the coronavirus. Are these worries justified? 

In this blog post I will inform you how risky flying is during the pandemic. How high are the chances of getting the virus and which safety measures make it safer.

How risky is flying during the pandemic?

What do you think is more dangerous? – going to the supermarket or flying on an airplane? Spoiler, it is the first!

The chances of getting the coronavirus on an airplane are existent but very minimal.  If this is the case why do people fear to fly at the moment. Let me give you an analogy. You probably recall that a lot of people were, even before the pandemic, afraid to fly in fear of an accident. The chances of having a fatal accident traveling by plane are so little. 1 in 29 Million. By bicycle it is 1 in 340,000. 85 times higher. Yet, I know so many people who are afraid to fly but I don’t know anyone who is afraid to ride the bike (except for me).

It is identical to current times. People jump easily to the conclusion that air travel must be unsafe because that thought-process has already been made in our brain before. We irrationally associate it with risk, even though an airplane is the one of the safest indoor environments.

Airlines do the best they can

Airlines do their best to make flying even safer. Cabin attendants are wearing special protective uniforms. Emirates provides a hygiene travel kit with masks, gloves and hand sanitizer for every passenger. Social distancing procedures are in force during boarding and disembarking (some airlines free up the middle seat) Airlines use enhanced cleaning procedures.  

When it comes to infectious disease, airplanes have an excellent safety record because the air people breathe while flying is some of the most filtered air in travel, according to Joseph Allen, who directs the Healthy Buildings program at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Cabins: The safest indoor environment

The air in (many) planes is a 50/50 mix of outdoor air and recirculated air. The outdoor air is bled off the engine, conditioned and delivered into the cabin. The other 50% is recirculated air that goes through HEPA filters.

All major commercial jets have ventilation systems with high-quality HEPA filters capable of removing 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria and other airborne particles with a size as small as 0.3 microns. For comparison, Covid-19 is thought to be between 0.06 to 1.4 microns.

Tips to lessen the risk

  • Wear the right mask at all times. Make sure it covers mouth AND nose.
  • Reduce the usage of the lavatory. Wait some time after another passenger used it.
  • Disinfect surfaces around your seat you may touch during the flight.
  • Avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes with your fingers.
  • Spread out in the cabin to create more space between fellow passengers.
  • Think about the full travel experiences and not solely about the flight itself.
  • Bring hand sanitizer with you and use it regularly especially after using the lavatory.
  • The shorter the flight the less the risk of getting infected.

The risks of getting infected are higher in security queues or on the way to the airport in the public transportation or when visiting the supermarket before the flight to get some snacks. So think about the full travel experience and not only about the flight itself. 

It is not about confining yourself and stopping doing things you enjoy but to use your capable mind to do research on the information that is just a google search away. Make the best decision for yourself, your mental health and others.

Drive with a Dune Buggy 

I think it is one of the activities you have to do when you are in Dubai. I did a self drive dune buggy experience with Expert Rangers which absolutely blew my mind. It was so much fun to drive with the buggy up and down the dunes. I got stuck a couple of times because I did not exactly follow the lead drive. Do not forget to bring your action camera to capture this Dubai highlight.

 Breakfast in a desert camp after the hot air ballon ride

Ride a Hot Air Balloon over the Desert

Waking up for this experience at 4 o’clock in the morning was very tough but it was absolutely worth it. For years I wanted to go on a hot air balloon ride. Twice it was canceled on me in South Africa. This time it finally took place in the desert of Dubai. It was a magical adventure to soar through the light chilly morning air and to observe the sun rise at the horizon. The landing was absolutely spectacular and a thrill in itself. After the flight with Platinum Heritage we drove to a desert camp to have breakfast.

Dine in the Burj Khalifa 

The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world which has not only become an icon of Dubai, but of the world. Of course, you can visit the observation decks to enjoy a breathtaking view of Dubai; but you can also definitely elevate your Burj Khalifa experience through a dining experience. Whether it is for lunch, high tea or for dinner. Dining at the AT.MOSPHERE, the highest restaurant in the world, at almost 500 meters elevation is spectacular by itself. The food becomes almost secondary. I went for dinner and enjoyed a 5 course tasting menu. Be sure to make a reservation at the window and do not wear open shoes (men).

Fly with a Gyrocopter 

For all aviation lovers, this activity is a must and it was also one of my favorite ones during my trip. Forget about all flight experiences you ever been on, this is the next level of flying. A gyrocopter is a combination of an airplane and a helicopter. It looks fragile and kind of  dangerous but it is absolutely safe. Even if the prop were to fail, the gyrocopter could still land safely by the wind propelling the rotor. No canopy, no wing and no doors give you 360 degrees of flying. The views and the feeling is absolutely incredible. The flight took me directly over The Palm Jumeirah, after taking off next to JBR Beach and flying next to Burj Al Arab

Scenic Flight in a Seaplane 

It was a premiere for me to fly on board a sea plane. It took off at the Jebel Ali Beach Hotel which is about 30 minutes from Dubai Marina in the direction of Abu Dhabi. Make sure to always plan with enough traveling times between destinations. 

Check in was quick and easy. After a short briefing and temperature control, we were ready for departure. I was excited to find out how a take off and landing felt on the water. Seawings fly with a Cessna Caravan which can carry up to 9 passengers. Unfortunately, due to Corona the copilot seat and the two seats behind are blocked to protect the pilot. 

The views from a maximum flight altitude of 1500 ft are stunning. Even if the flight is only 20 minutes you get the major sights of Dubai. Make sure that you fly on a day with good visibility. At the end of the flight I was surprised that the take off and landing did not feel much different to a runway.

Step on a Glass Bottom in Dubai Frame 

This is my “hidden” gem for you, It is the world’s biggest picture frame and from a distance it looks like it is framing the skyline of Downtown Dubai. It is quite spectacular to see it from the outside since it is covered with one ton of gold! I did know that you can visit the building from the  inside until I found out that I could get a free entrance with my Emirates Airlines return flight ticket (subject to change). An elevator takes you 150 meters high to the observation platform. Be careful as the floor becomes see through when you step on it; Best to visit shortly before sunset.

Dine in the Sky at Dubai Marina

A unique experience for those who enjoy a kick of excitement during dinner. A crane lifts you and a huge construction of tables and seats 50 meter above the streets of Dubai. The view is iconic both during the day and night. I was not really scared of the height but a little concerned that I may drop something because next to your table edge was a big drop. Dinner in the sky is a nice place to celebrate something special!

Flyboard over the Water

This is something I always wanted to try out – Flying over the water with a jetpack! I had previously heard that it is quite difficult so I decided to take the flyboard of Hydro Water Sports first, which is supposingly a little easier. I must admit before this activity I was the most nervous (even though I had previously jumped out of a plane).  Here I was in control and in charge of my performance. In the beginning,   it was quite tricky to get out of the water but after a few minutes I knew how to control the flyboard. It is definitely something exciting to try out when you like water sports. It was soooo much fun!

Skydive over The Palm

Normally I fly airplanes but this time I jumped out of one! It is an adventure of a lifetime you have to do if you want the ultimative adrenaline kick.

The jump with Sky Dive Dubai takes place at approx. 4000 ft directly overhead The Palm Jumeirah and I do not think there is a more epic location than this. After I landed safely on the ground (the whole flight lasts only 5 minutes) I wanted to jump again. It is worth every penny considering that an extra jumper is there solely to take photos and film a video of your experience. It is definitely Dubais thrill activities number one.

Covid-19 traveling

I sure had a blast in Dubai despite the pandemic. Every activity was well organized and they took exceptional care that you feel safe. In case you need a PCR-test prior leaving the country you can contact your hotel concierge. I did my test at the Palazzo Versace hotel. Thee medical staff came to my room to do the test. The costs were 200 AED (approx. 58€) and the result came via email within 24 hours. Please keep yourself updated about all travel requirements to avoid disappointment

Why is there a lack of diversity in the cockpit?

Dear Aviator,

do you still remember the good old days in aviation before the novel coronavirus hit us? It was a booming industry with a constantly increasing demand for air travel, new jets with the most modern technology that could fly to the furthest destinations, and business class which could have been first class. Airlines were bracing for a severe pilot shortage. For now, this problem is solved but for the long term, it will arise again but why? The lack of diversity in the cockpit could be the reason.

Covid-19 came around the corner and destroyed aviation in a second. In one second the demand for pilots was gone. Even worse bankruptcy, lower demand, smaller fleets, low liquidity have been causing a lot of pilots to lose their jobs already.

I think it will take about two years until we are back at the same level as before Corona. We can expect during this period to be very low, with almost no demand for pilots. Step by step the demand will rise again. Let’s hope it will only be a very long low before aviation takes off again to the same level. In case no other factor will torpedo the business, the 2019 Boeing Pilot & Technician Outlook projects that 804,000 new civil aviation pilots are required to maintain the world fleet over the next 20 years.

Why do airlines have to brace for a pilot shortage?

There are many reasons for the anticipated pilot shortage. It is a mix of increasing regulation, growing demand for air travel, fleet growth, and an aging workforce. Pilots have to stop flying commercially latest with the age of 65. But there’s one cause that also offers a solution:

The industry has long struggled to recruit women, people of color, and members of other marginalized groups.

The lack of diversity in the cockpit

In 2008 I started my training to become a pilot. At the time I already noticed the lack of diversity in aviation. Back then the flight school was called Intercockpit, which is now the European Flight Academy, a subsidiary of Lufthansa Aviation Training. My course consisted of 25 men and only one woman!

During one of my first lessons with the DA20, my flight instructor looked at me and said:

“Patrick, you have to know: Women and black people have no place in the cockpit!”.

At that moment I was more busy concentrating on the approach than thinking about his discriminating statement.

The lack of diversity continued with my first pilot job. It was a small charter company with business jets in Berlin. The fleet consisted of about 10 jets and only white men were working in the cockpit. Not one single woman in the cockpit only in the cabin.  My second private jet employer had a fleet that was double the size and had at least two women flying.

I found that women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ community were significantly underrepresented, this did not change when I switched to a big german airline in 2016. Less then 3% of the flight crew were women and I have not seen a black colleague. After flying for 6 years, it was the first time I flew with a female captain.

Current statistics

These are really no exceptions. Statistics prove my numbers. A review of the latest Civil Airmen Statistics indicates that a little over 4% of Airline Transport Certificate holders – the required certification to fly for a major carrier – are women. No major U.S. carrier hired a female pilot until 1973.

The situation is even worse for African Americans, who were not hired to pilot a commercial airplane until the 1960s. Things changed only because of a six-year battle against Continental Airlines waged by Marlon Green, who filed a discrimination complaint against the carrier. In 1963, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in his favor, paving the way for the first black pilot, David Ellsworth Harris, whom American Airlines hired in 1964. Green would follow suit at Continental in 1965.

Helen Richey was the first female commercial pilot in 1934.

Captain David Harris was the first African American Airline commercial pilot hired by a major US airline in 1964 and was the first to be promoted to Captain.

Why is there a lack of diversity in the cockpit?

I have met great, open-minded, and modern thinking pilots. Most of them belonged to the younger generation. Unfortunately, there is still a huge percentage of pilots that are not tolerant and have a mindset like my flight instructor in Zadar.

To understand the roots of the issue: He was over 60 at that time. At the beginning of his aviation career he probably never flew with a single woman or an open LGBTQ member. When he became a captain, the WHO still considered being homosexual as a sickness. The authority gap in the cockpit was immense which was later found to deteriorate safety.

It is also a perception problem, where women are not seen as authoritative enough for positions like a captain of an aircraft.

The white male dominance

I had to experience a lot of sexist behavior against women. Pilots used their white male dominance in this job to feel superior. I had to listen to so many bad jokes about women and other minority groups. in the cockpit. I was getting sick of it and I had a hard time keeping calm because I feared when I would speak up a good atmosphere in the cockpit would infringe safety.

It is like a bowl of tomato soup. You put only a little bit too much salt in it is over-salted. The same applies to the behavior, beliefs, and attitude of some pilots. This has caused the cultures in aviation not to be very inclusive.

This domination of white men paired with known intolerance probably intimidates minor groups from pursuing a career in aviation.

Another barrier for those who lack resources and support. The cost of flight training can range from US$50,000 to upwards of $100,000.

What could lead to more acceptance?

In the end, corona could aggravate the pilot shortage problem in the future even more. The demand will eventually come back to an extreme high. But then we most probably experience an even greater lack of pilots, because of uncertainty during the crisis fewer people started their training to become a pilot.

I believe a stronger focus on attracting a diverse workforce and embracing a more inclusive culture is pivotal to ensuring there are enough pilots as we return back to the skies.

It is terrifying to see that some pilots believe that they are superior just because of their profession and believe that they are “flying gods”. I have been accused of disenfranchising the job because I have shown that I have feelings and that it is ok to be “colorful” on social media.

The new generation of pilots will help to lose the old stigmata and outdated bodies of thought.

What kind of diet do you recommend? How to reach your body goals?

I’m a big fan of carbohydrates. Bread, rice, potatoes, and pasta should never be missing in a diet. You should eat very balanced. Fruits and vegetables every day. Blend an apple, a banana with berries and add milk you have a superheated shake that is easily prepared. A mixed salad with a good dressing has never harmed anyone in the evening. Last but not least, don’t forget the protein! Fresh chicken, beef, and fish. (Organic please) For vegetarians, I recommend tofu, low-fat cheese, a high-quality whey protein, and veggie protein powder as a protein source.

Why do you think most diets fail?

There are several reasons why self-employed people do not follow a diet. Almost nobody can stick to fixed times. Most diets are tied to meal times. The diet program is doomed to fail as soon as you don’t keep track of the timing. Almost nobody can eat consistently at 8 a.m., eat at 1 pm and 7 pm for 365 Days. Often unexpected events come in between and then you forget to have lunch or breakfast. The second point why diets fail is that people have to refrain from eating sweets and delicious food during the diet program. You can cope with that for usually 2 weeks butter you feel like having a piece of chocolate or a pizza.

The diet program

I created a diet program that is systematically integrated into your everyday life and I show people a strategy to get your desired weight with alcohol, chocolate, pizza, and co. The third point is that most people believe is that you have to refrain from drinking alcohol to lose weight. Most diets have a strict alcohol ban which I cannot understand. At the end of the day alcohol are calories thus energy. So if you cut calories in the form of carbohydrates then you may incorporate alcohol in your diet plan. Wine, beer or even a cocktail is no problem but as always the quantity is crucial.

My current diet

After I returned back from Cape Town in March, quarantine measures were in force. A great moment to fast and to heal my body with the detoxification which is linked to it. Check out my blog “Try This Out During Quarantine” for more details about my fasting period. I lost a lot of weight. About 6 kgs in total and I looked really skinny. After breaking the fasting I started following a different diet as before since I was stagnating the past three years. I was not able to gain more weight and more muscles. My goal was to change this but this meant I needed to alter my diet since I was doing already wright lifting.

Diet is not the right term, I would rather call it an eating habit or routine. Only a few weeks later you could observe major progress in building muscles. Seven weeks after fasting I gained over 8 kgs again respectively about 3,5 kgs of muscles. You were really surprised about my progress and being honest, me too.

How did I do that?

I am not following the metabolic diet which means I mean eating a lot of protein the before. Every day the intake of protein is high. With my body weight I would need to eat over 400g of protein a day. This is almost impossible. Currently I eat about 200g – 250g of protein. On workout days it is moderate carbohydrates (in the morning/before and post-workout) and low fat. On days without a workout it is the opposite. Low carbohydrates and moderate fats. This diet evens forgive way I can even have a pizza.

Which camera?

The best camera is the one you are carrying with you!  

In my early beginning (2016) I just used my phone to cremate my content but I was never really happy with the quality and I am still not really convinced that a smartphone camera can keep up with a DSLM or DSLR camera despite all the improvements. 

I invested in a Sony compact camera, Sony RX100 VII, which is extremely versatile. With a flip screen, 4K videos +, fast autofocus, it is the perfect beginner blogging and vlogging camera. I still use this model as a backup camera and for occasions when I do not want to carry my main camera. I primarily use the Panasonic LUMIX G9 (DSLM) which is great for videos and photos as well. 4K resolution, fantastic video stabilisation, external microphone and a flip screen. Photo wise it convinces with exchangeable lenses, 6k resolution, fast autofocus and you can connect your smartphone with an app to shoot yourself.

Light 

The correct lightning makes the photo! You might have the perfect motive but the light is not optimal. I use a lamp for interior shooting like in hotel rooms, spas, aircraft and whenever it is too dark. For stories and selfies you want frontal light on your face. In case daylight is not sufficient I can recommend an inexpensive selfie light.

I could not imagine a blogger life without them anymore. Think about how many times you wanted to record yourself or where not able to put your camera that way to capture the frame. Tripods are the answer.

Back as a flight student my POF teacher (principle of flight) always said: “All you need is speed to make something fly!” Same applies to shooting content but here in this case you need power. Make sure you take a fully charged power bar and spare cables to have your cameras always ready to be used.

Advanced Equipment

Underwater dome

This gadget is a must for shootings underwater. It is a simple plastic in which you can mount your GoPro (I am sure it exists for different cameras as well) You are able to capture above and below the water line in one image. The dome is not expansive and your audience will be curious how you did it. It requires a little bit practice to get everything in frame. In case you do not want to invest in a dome. Take two photos. One above the waterline and one below. The effect is the same but not as good as with the dome.

Drone

Expansive but almost a must for any travel blogger and aviation geek. 

It definitely need a lot of practices. Besides flying the drone you need to know how to record footage correctly so a video is in one flow. 

Nowadays they have become so advanced that it is almost impossible to crash them but you need to know where  you are allowed to fly them and the regulations. Before a trip make sure which special drone laws apply and if you are even allowed to fly. Don’t do it like me: flying around the Hollywood sign and then crashing it in the bush.
